Spain: judge allows matches on Fridays but not on Mondays, RFEF claims legal victory

Judge Andres Sanchez Magro of the Commercial Court No. 2 of Madrid has authorized LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank matches on Fridays, but maintains the ban on Mondays, in his ruling issued on 09/08/2019.

"We are very happy. This is a historic day, the position of the Federation has prevailed, as has my commitment to supporters to ban Mondays from our football," said Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Federation, on 09/08/2019.

The 2019-20 LaLiga calendars had scheduled matches on Fridays and Mondays, while the Federation demanded that all matches of the top two Spanish divisions be played on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Spanish Federation would be willing, according to LaLiga, to accept matches played on weekdays in exchange for €30m (10% of the sums collected by LaLiga for games broadcast on Fridays and Mondays). The total amount of domestic and international TV rights for the Spanish championship exceeds €2bn in 2019-20.
