Transfers: a record €6.6bn spent by European Top 5 clubs on transfers in 2019 (CIES)

The European Top 5 clubs (from the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A TIM, LaLiga Santander and Ligue 1 Conforama) spent a record total of €6.622bn on transfer fees in 2019, according to the CIES Football Observatory's monthly report published on 04/09/2019.

"This sum is almost a 10% increase over the previous record of 2017 (€6.064bn). In ten years, the investments in transfer indemnities carried out by big-5 (European Top 5) league clubs have grown by more than four times," said the International Centre for Sports Studies.

"In 2019, a new spending record was established in three of the leagues studied: LaLiga, the Serie A and the Bundesliga. As for the previous nine years, English clubs invested the most for the recruitment of new players: €1.9bn. Over the last decade, transfer indemnity investments of Premier League teams accounted for 35.8% of the total measured for the big-5.
