Nike has extended its contract as the kit supplier of the Portuguese national team until 2017-18, announced the FPF (Portuguese Football Federation) on 03/03/2014. The new contract covers Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The American brand has supported the Portuguese team since the 1997-98 season. The contract "is the most important" in the history of the federation, said Fernando Gomes, president of the FPF. This contract allows a reduction in public funding of the federation. It amounts to "less than 2%" in 2014.

In addition to the supply of goods, Nike will also invest in the construction of the "Cidade do Futebol" (City of football) which will be constructed "without public investment," said Gomes. The infrastructure comes at a cost of €10m and is to be delivered in July 2015. The future training centre of the Portuguese national team is funded to the tune of €3m by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) and one million from FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). The FPF, with the help of Nike, will cover the remaining €6m.
