Romania: Razvan Burleanu new chairman of the Football Federation

News Tank Football - Paris - Appointment #15781 - Published on

Razvan Burleanu was elected chairman of the FRF (Romanian Football Federation) until 2018, at the association's ordinary general assembly, on 05/03/2014. He replaces Mircea Sandu, in office since 1990. He had been elected just after the fall of Romanian leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his death on 25/12/1989.

At age 29, Razvan Burleanu becomes the youngest chairman in the history of the FRF, but also the youngest chairman of any Romanian sports federation.

This change comes after the sentencing of eight Romanian football personalities, including former captain of FC Barcelona Gheorghe Popescu for corruption. Convictions concern the misappropriation of funds and embezzlement from transfers of Romanian players abroad.

  • "Being elected president is a huge responsibility for me.
  • Thank you for your faith. It is an extraordinary honour for me and I will do my best to perform at the highest level.
  • I assure you I will not disappoint. We now go to work, starting today."
