European clubs made 14,322 international transfers (from one national association to another) during the seasons 2011-12 and 2012-13, for a total of $5.147b (€3.747b), said a study by ECA (European Club Association), entitled "The transfer system in Europe," published for the 12th general meeting of the association held on 03 and 04/03/2014 in Barcelona (ESP).

"It is for this reason that ECA felt the need to commission a study highlighting the reality governing the transfer system. The aim of this study, based on real figures from official sources and focussing on a European perspective, is to understand how the current transfer system works in order to provide a more credible and reliable basis for discussion," said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of ECA, and Michele Centenaro, general secretary of the association, in the foreword to the study published on 04/03/2014.
