Serie A: €1.77b in revenue in 2012-13 an increase of 8%, gross debt €2.8b

The 20 clubs of Serie A generated a total turnover of €1.772b in 2012-13, an increase of 8% compared to the previous season, according to a study by the daily Italian sports newspaper, La Gazzetta dello Sport on 08/03/2014. This increase primarily reflects the implementation of a new TV rights agreement (between €950m and €975m per season over the period 2012-2015 against €911m in the previous, or 7% increase).

Cumulative expenditure of Serie A clubs increased by 4% in 2012-13 to €2.365b, and payroll represents on average 68% of the turnover of clubs. Their operating deficit amounted to €593m in 2012-13, down 7.3% compared to 2011-12 (-€640m). Without transfer spending, clubs in 2012-13 Serie A would show an operating loss of €203m, 30.5% less than in 2011-12 (€292m).

Gross debt of the 20 clubs in Serie A increased by 35% between 2008 and 2013 from €2.111b at the end of 2008-09 to €2.855b in 2012-13.
