Sports TV rights: total global value ($48bn in 2018) could reach $85bn in 2025 (Rethink TV)

The total value of sports broadcasting rights is expected to reach $85bn (€78bn) in 2025 compared to $48bn (€44bn) in 2018, a 77% increase over seven years, according to a study by Rethink TV, a British consulting and analysis firm specialised in OTT, published on 27/09/2019.

UEFA is expected to be the main beneficiary of this increase as, according to the study, European Cup broadcasting rights will increase from $3.5bn (€3.2bn) per year to over $12bn (€11bn). While the NFL, which is largely dominant in this field with TV rights revenues estimated today at over $7.2bn (€6.6bn) per season currently, is expected to be outperformed by the NBA in 2025.

In terms of the Top 5 European leagues, the Premier League would continue to increase its gap over its competitors with an estimated $5.5bn (€5bn) per season in 2025, compared to $2.9bn (€2.7bn) for LaLiga and $2.8bn (€2.6bn) for the Bundesliga. Ligue 1 would overtake the Serie A with TV rights estimated at $1.7bn (€1.5bn) per season compared to $1.2bn (€1.1bn) for the Italian league.
