Serie A TIM: Giorgio Squinzi (76), owner of Mapei and US Sassuolo Calcio, dies

Giorgio Squinzi, president of Mapei, an Italian group specialised in chemical adhesives and building products, and owner of Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio (Serie A TIM), has died in Milan (ITA) at the age of 76 as a result of a "long illness," according to US Sassuolo on 02/10/2019.

Owner of the Mapei group founded by his father Rodolfo, Giorgio Squinzi acquired US Sassuolo, a football club in Emilia Romagna (near Modena, ITA) which at the time was in the Serie C2 (fourth division). Under his leadership, Unione Sportiva Sassuolo Calcio reached the Serie A, where the club has been playing continuously since the 2013-14 season. Sassuolo even participated in the group stage of the Europa League in 2016-17. Previously, through Giorgio Squinzi, from 1993 to 2002, Mapei was a sponsor of a cycling team of the same name.
