Sportel 2019: "20% of internet users accessing illegal streams of sports" (R. Hoy, DLA Piper)

"A study done in the UK last year by the UK Intellectual Property Office said that around about 20% of internet users are accessing illegal streams of sports content. In addition to that, there's more than a million loaded Kodi boxes (a media player available on multiple platforms, which allows users to play files stored locally, such as videos and music, and stream live internet broadcasts and podcasts) out there that also allow illegal access to sports streams," said Ruth Hoy, partner at DLA Piper, at the 2019 edition of Sportel Monaco, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco from 21 to 23/10/2019, on 21/10/2019. "In the UK computer misuse offenses are actually more prevalent than burglary and robbery.
There's also been a study done by the University of Amsterdam, which has said that the figure of people accessing illegal content rises when you look at other countries around the world; in France, 40%; in Poland, 52%; in Spain, 64% and in Indonesia, a whopping 84%," continued Hoy.
