Brazil 2014: without additional funding, Porto Alegre may not host the World Cup

The City of Porto Alegre may not host the 2014 World Cup (Brazil, 12/06 to 13/07/2014) if the bill which would allow the private funding of temporary facilities around the stadium (which will be voted on 25/03/2014) is not adopted by the local parliament, said Mayor José Fortunati on 24/03/2014.

The stadium, which is to host five matches of the World Cup, was officially inaugurated on 20/02/2014, but the temporary facilities for the competition (the press centre, volunteer centre, electric generators, gates, X-ray detectors ...) are not ready. SC Internacional, the resident club, announced that it could not afford the 30m reais (€9m) required, on 14/02/2014.

"We are in a difficult situation. If the project is not voted on, we won't have the World Cup in Porto Alegre. There's no Plan B, nor C, nor Z," said José Fortunati.
