FIFA: first edition of the new 24-team Club World Cup to be hosted in China in June-July 2021

The FIFA Council unanimously nominated China (the only candidate) as host of the new version of the Club World Cup, starting in 2021, announced the international federation at the conclusion of the meeting of its Council in Shanghai (CHN) on 24/10/2019. "A historic decision", according to Gianni Infantino (ITA-SUI), FIFA president.

"The tournament will be played between June and July 2021 and the final list of venues will be decided by FIFA and the Chinese FA.The participation model to determine the clubs that qualify from each confederation will be finalised in a consultation process between FIFA and the six confederations," said FIFA.

Gianni Infantino indicated that eight European teams (out of 24, or one third of the field) will take part in this version of the Club World Cup. This new formula will be organized every four years and will replace the Confederations Cup, the year before the World Cup. "It will be a competition that every person, every child and whoever loves football will look forward to," said the FIFA president.
