"Following Saturday's semi-final between New Zealand and England (7-19), 1,024,000 people have now visited the 16 fanzones across the length and breadth of Japan, surpassing the one million set at Rugby World Cup 2015," said World Rugby on 27/10/2019.

Without the cancellation of three matches in the group stage because of the Hagibis typhoon, "the record would have already been achieved at the quarter-final stage," continued the body adding that "99% of all tickets have been sold, a Rugby World Cup record."

"With a variety of fun activities, partner activations and live screening of all the matches, the Rugby World Cup 2019 fanzones have become one of the major attractions of a special tournament," said Bill Beaumont, president of World Rugby.

  • "Our Rugby World Cup 2019 fanzones have introduced to Japan a whole new culture of coming together to watch and enjoy sport in an exciting, festival-like atmosphere.
  • For many Japanese, visiting fanzones gave them their first experience of rugby and a taste of the unique and special atmosphere of a Rugby World Cup."
