Advertisers pay on average €2.3m per year to appear on shirts of MLS franchises

Shirt sponsorship deals are worth, on average, €2.3m for franchises of Major League Soccer in 2014. The highest value contract is that of Herbalife, a company specialising in food supplements, with Los Angeles Galaxy for €3.2m annually until 2022.

MLS clubs negotiate their own sponsorship contracts but may seek technical and legal assistance from SUM (Soccer United Marketing). SUM is the subsidiary of the MLS responsible for the sale and management of marketing and audiovisual rights and activities. They have a team dedicated to consulting the franchises, in order to help them improve their business practices.

The only contract that may not be negotiated individually is the kit supplier contract. MLS is under contract with Adidas until 2018 to equip all franchises in the league. The German brand pays €18m annually.

MLS shirt sponsors

  • Seattle are looking for a new shirt sponsor beginning in 2015 for between $6m and $8m (€4.4m and €5.8m) per year, which would be the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in the history of MLS.
