UEFA Congress in Astana (KAZ) unanimously adopts a Nations League from 2018

"The 54 UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) member associations unanimously adopted a four-point resolution entitled 'National men's A-team competitions 2018-2022", which will see the launch of the Nations League from 2018. The competition will feature promotion and relegation, will see a winning team every odd year and will replace most international friendlies," said UEFA after its annual conference in Astana (Kazakhstan), on 27/03/2014.

"We accept and respect that all UEFA member associations have agreed to create a new competition. This is a big step for national teams in Europe and we hope that fans will support the new format," said Wolfgang Niersbach, president of the National Teams Competition Committee.

54 national teams will be divided into four divisions, according to their UEFA ranking.

Four teams qualifying for each final tournament via the Nations League.

  • Before Euro 2020, each division will have four groups of three or four teams.
