European cups (2021-2024): CBS confirms the acquisition of TV rights in the United States

Joe Ianniello, acting CEO of the American broadcasting group CBS, has confirmed the acquisition of the English-language rights to the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and the future Europa Conference League, in the United States, for the 2021-2024 cycle, on 12/11/2019.

The deal, as well as that of the audiovisual group Univision for the rights in the USA in Spanish language, had been reported by American media since 09/11/2019. The combined amounts of the two groups would be between $140m and $150m (around €136m) per year, compared to $100m (about €90m) per year over the 2018-2021 cycle, according to US media. This is a new acquisition for CBS, which will replace Turner Sports, the English-language rights holder for the current cycle, while Univision retains the rights in Spanish.

This is the first time that CBS, which broadcasts the NFL, college basketball (NCAA) and golf (PGA Tour) games, has acquired the rights to a major football competition in decades (the 1974 World Cup).
