African Super Cup in Qatar: Zamalek refuses to play in an "enemy of Egypt" on 14/02/2020

The board of the Zamalek Sporting Club (Cairo, Egypt) "unanimously decides not to participate in the Super Cup of Africa", scheduled in Doha (QAT) on Friday, 14/02/2020, announced the Egyptian club on 26/11/2019.

Mortada Mansour, president of the club, had expressed this refusal as of 22/11/2019, indicating that there was no question for Zamalek to play "in a country that is the enemy of Egypt". Like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, Egypt has severed diplomatic relations with Qatar, accused of seeking to destabilize the region, from around 05/06/2017.

The CAF Executive Committee, meeting in Cairo (EGY), announced on 21/11/2019 that for the second consecutive year, the capital of Qatar will host this prestigious match between the latest winner of the CAF Champions League (Espérance sportive de Tunis, TUN) and that of the Confederation Cup (Zamalek Sporting Club, EGY).
