Formula E: the competition will be recognised as an FIA World Championship from the 2021-22 season

Formula E's single-seater electric car competition, will become the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship from the 2021-22 season, announced Formula E and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) on 03/12/2019. Formula E thus becomes the fifth world championship governed by the FIA, along with the Formula One World Championship, the World Rally Championship (WRC), the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the World Rallycross Championship (World RX) races.

"Following a vote of its members, the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has granted full world championship status to the FIA Formula E Championship. FIA president Jean Todt and chairman of Formula E Alejandro Agag signed the agreement together at the FIA headquarters in Paris," said the bodies.

"Transitioning to the highest level in the FIA sanctioned single-seater hierarchy, means the most competitive line-up of teams and drivers in motorsport will be competing for the newly named ABB FIA Formula E World Championship title next season.
