Supercopa de España in Saudi Arabia: no free-TV offer, Movistar buys the pay-TV rights

The Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica has acquired, for its pay-TV package Movistar, the broadcasting rights in Spain for the next three editions of the Supercopa de España (2020-2022), from the RFEF on 05/12/2019.

These three editions will be held in Saudi Arabia, which motivated the boycott of the call for tenders by the Spanish public broadcaster RTVE: "If we focus on women's sport at RTVE, what would we do in a country where women are imprisoned for defending their rights?" said a spokesperson for the public channel on 14/11/2019.

Additionally, the free and private television groups Mediaset España and Atresmedia, as well as the Chinese-Spanish audiovisual group Mediapro (free-TV channel Gol), also did not participate in the call for tenders, according to Spanish media.
