TV rights: "3 subscriptions to watch the Bundesliga would be excessive" (Christian Seifert, DFL)

"If you need three subscriptions to watch the entire Bundesliga, that would force the threshold of the bear-ability from our point of view," stated Christian Seifert,CEO of the DFL, to the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag on 08/12/2019, while the German Football League will launch its call for tenders for the Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga domestic broadcast rights for the 2021-2025 cycle in 2020.

"We were spoiled in Germany, for decades all matches were broadcast live by a single operator and you had free summaries on 'Sportschau' (programme of the German public channel ARD). Of course we know what we can do compared to viewers and what we can not do," added the director of the German League.

The announcement took place two days before Amazon announced the acquisition of the rights, in Germany, to the Champions League's best game on Tuesday nights for the 2021-2024 cycle, reinforcing competition in the market where Sky Deutschland and DAZN are currently broadcasting the Bundesliga (see details below).
