Brazil 2014: FIFA and Sony to produce three matches and official tournament film in Ultra HD

FIFA and the Japanese company, Sony, major partner of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association and official partner of the 2014 World Cup (Brazil, from 12/06 to 13/07/2014), will produce three matches of the competition as well as the official tournament film using Ultra HD (4K) technology, "to promote the development of 4K content," announced the international body on 03/04/2014.

Ultra HD, also known as 4K, has a quality of image which features four times the resolution of the traditional Full-HD, that is to say 3840 (width) x 2160 (height) pixels, or 8.3 megapixels, as opposed to 2.1 megapixels (1920 x 1080) for the current Full-HD technology.

FIFA and Sony tested the 4K technology during the Confederations Cup 2013 (Brazil, from 15/06 to 30/06/2013) and announced on 13/09/2013 that the 2014 World Cup final, held on 13/07/2014 at Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, would be produced and distributed using the technology. The two additional fixtures will be the Round of Sixteen and quarter-final to be played at the Maracana on 28/06 and 04/07/2014.
