Giancarlo Abete, the former president of the Italian Football Federation (from 02/04/2007 to 30/06/2014), was elected special commissioner in charge of Lega Serie A until 10/03/2020 by the Federal Council of FIGC, on the proposal of Gabriele Gravina, the current president of the Federation, in Rome (ITA) on 18/12/2019.

Giancarlo Abete replaces Mario Cicala, who had been in office since 02/12/2019 and who resigned on 17/12/2019, due to a possible conflict of interest linked to his role as alternate on the supervisory board of SS Lazio (Serie A TIM), a position he had not disclosed.

The appointment of Mario Cicala itself followed the resignation of Gaetano Miccichè, president of Lega Serie A, on 19/11/2019: "The rumours published today in the newspapers about the closure of the investigation regarding my appointment 20 months ago and of its possible outcome are unacceptable and oblige me to make this decision," stated Gaetano Miccichè on 19/11/2019, thus taking the lead in the face of doubts concerning the regularity of his election unanimously, by acclamation, on 19/03/2018.
