LaLiga: Supreme Court of Spain authorises channels to broadcast 90-second highlights per match

The Supreme Court of Spain (the highest court in the Spanish justice system) has rejected LaLiga's appeal against decisions of the Audiencia Nacional (centralised court in Spain with jurisdiction over all Spanish territory) and the CNMC (Comisión de los Mercados y La Competencia, Spain's competition regulator) which authorise Spanish television channels, whether free or paying, to broadcast 90-second highlights of each of LaLiga Santander, LaLiga SmartBank and Copa del Rey matches, without having to pay any audiovisual fees, on 09/01/2020.

As part of this conflict, which began during the 2015-2018 cycle of LaLiga Santander's TV rights, LaLiga was fined €250,000 by the CNMC for banning Mediaset España's cameras from stadiums on 16/06/2017. For its part, the Audiencia Nacional had previously rejected LaLiga's request for the suspension of a CNMC decision on the broadcasting rights of highlights of the matches organised by LaLiga on 29/02/2016.
