Betting sponsors: the UK plans to change its regulations

"Ministers have committed to reviewing the Gambling Act 2005 and it is expected that the regulations surrounding sponsorship of football shirts, and gambling advertising in sport generally, will be among a host of regulations that are assessed," according to the British daily newspaper The Times on 14/01/2020.

Among the amendments envisaged is a general ban on shirt sponsorship by sports betting companies for sports clubs in the United Kingdom. Less extreme measures are also under consideration, such as requiring betting sponsors to demonstrate a commitment to promoting responsible betting or gambling.

In the Premier League, 10 clubs display a betting brand as a main shirt sponsor in 2019-20. On average, sports betting operators pay £6.36m (€7m) to Premier League clubs (see below). Sports betting operators have a strong presence in the Premier League, notably with Leicester City FC, which has five betting sponsors: Betway, Yabo Sport, W88, bet365 and 19.com.
