Premier League: BT Sport expected to win bid for 2016-2019 TV rights, according to HSBC bank

London analysts of the bank HSBC advised their clients, in a note published on 03/04/2014, to sell their shares in BSkyB because BT Sport was "likely to win" the tender for 2016-2019 TV rights of the Premier League. BSkyB shares fell 2.9% on 03/04/2014, which was the worst performance of the day on the FTSE 100, to reach £892.5 (about €1,080). The telecommunications group, BT, fell 0.4% to £381.6 (€461.5).

The British pay-TV groups, BSkyB and BT Sport, are currently domestic co-broadcasters of the Premier League for the 2013-2016 cycle. BT Sport, a new player in the market, also acquired the exclusive TV rights to the Champions League in the UK for the 2015-2018 period, in a bid against BSkyB. Meanwhile, Sky's share price has increased by 8.2% since 01/01/2014, HSBC and the brokerage firm, Oriel Securities, believe that the current price is too high.
