UEFA: Greece, Gibraltar, Armenia and Latvia have modified the format of their 1st divisions in 2019

Greece has been reduced from 16 to 14 clubs, Gibraltar has increased from 10 to 12, Armenia from 8 to 10 and Latvia from 8 to 9. These are the four countries - among the 55 that fall under UEFA's jurisdiction (see list below) - that have modified the format of their national first division championships for the 2019-20 season, according to the 11th edition of the "European Club Footballing Landscape report" (Chapter 1 devoted to "domestic competitions and governance") published by UEFA on 16/01/2020.

Four European countries have a first division with 20 clubs (England, Spain, France and Italy) and four others one with 18 teams (Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and Turkey). In the other 46 countries (Liechtenstein is the only European country not to organise a domestic league, with its clubs being integrated into the Swiss leagues), the first divisions are comprised of 8 to 16 clubs (see infographic below).
