UEFA: John Delaney (Republic of Ireland) resigns from executive committee after being suspended

"UEFA takes note of John Delaney's resignation with immediate effect from his position as UEFA executive committee member which was due to end in 2021," announced the European body on 20/01/2020.

"John Delaney (born 16/10/1967) has been effectively suspended by UEFA, during investigations into alleged financial irregularities at the Football Association of Ireland," revealed the British newspaper The Times on 18/01/2020. The Sunday Times had claimed in March 2019 that John Delaney had lent €100,000 to the Irish Federation (FAI), without the operation appearing in the Federation's accounts. This affair led him to resign as executive vice-president of the FAI on 28/09/2019.

"We are waiting for the results of the investigation. In the meantime, Mr Delaney is not invited to UEFA committee meetings nor to executive committee meetings," said the European body to The Times on 18/01/2020.
