Dragomir Dumitru, former president of the Romania LPF (Professional Football League) from 1996 to 2003, is suspected of having embezzled €3m from TV rights between 2011 and 2013, said the prosecutor of the court of Bucharest (ROU) on 07/04/2014.

The former leader, who was placed in custody for 24 hours, is expected to be prosecuted for embezzlement, tax evasion and money laundering.

The money passed through fictional accounts, according to the Romanian prosecutor. Searches were carried out at the headquarters of the Romanian league and home of Dragomir Dumitru.

"I have always had confidence in the Romanian judicial system. I feel very strong. I want to thank those who have trusted me and I will prove that I am innocent," said the former president of the Romanian league on 08/04/2014, after being questioned for five hours.

  • Several Romanian businessmen are also being investigated as part of the case: Michael Corbu, for complicity in the theft, tax evasion and money laundering, as well as Alexandru Radu and Arhire Madalin for complicity in tax evasion and money laundering.
