Atlético de Madrid: club acquires license for a new Canadian Premier League franchise

Club Atlético de Madrid (LaLiga Santander) has acquired a license from the Canadian Premier League (CPL) and will thus launch a new franchise in the Canadian top flight, announced the Spanish club on 29/01/2020.

The new club will be based in the capital city of Ottawa (Ontario, CAN) and will play their home games at the TD Place Stadium (24,000 capacity). The team is expected to be announced on 12/02/2020 at an event dedicated to the official launch of the franchise.

The second edition of the Canadian Premier League, which begins on 11/04/2020, will feature eight teams, compared to seven in 2019, its inaugural season.

• The Canadian Premier League runs from April to November and begins with a Spring tournament, followed by an Autumn tournament.
• At the end of the Autumn tournament, the winners of the two tournaments will face each other in a two-legged final.
• The franchise Forge FC won the 2019 edition of the competition.
