Pay-TV: +6.3% subscribers worldwide in 2013, according to 2013 Multiscreen Index

Pay-TV operators saw their number of subscribers grow by 6.3% in 2013, according to the Multiscreen Index, a study published by the British media specialists, informativ, on 07/04/2014. This quarterly indicator takes into account 100 pay-TV services in 30 countries, covering about 320 million households.

This 6.3% increase equates to 18.98 million new subscribers. Satellite services, cable and ADSL subscribers all increased, especially ADSL. "Pay-TV providers are launching multiscreen offerings to head off competition from new online subscription video services," said William Cooper, founder and CEO of informitv.

"Our research reveals that there is an increasing trend towards delivering services to multiple screens, from smartphones to smart televisions. Contrary to popular opinion that television subscriptions are in decline, the informitv Multiscreen Index presents a bigger picture that shows the total number of pay-TV subscriptions is increasing, particularly in developing markets," said the company's CEO.
