Brazil 2014: 55% of Brazilians believe that the World Cup will not be beneficial for their country

55% of Brazilians believe that the 2014 World Cup will do more harm than good to their country, according to a study by the Brazilian Institute of Datafolha, published on 08/04/2014. Just 36% believe that the World Cup will benefit the country in the future.

50% of women, 52% of 16-24 year olds, 55% of the population in the south and 64% of people who say that they are disappointed by Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil, believe that the contribution of the World Cup will be negative.

The Brazilian Institute also indicated that 48% of Brazilians were in favour of the Brazilian World Cup, 31% less than in November 2008 (when 79% of people had been in favour of the event).
Over the same period, the number of people opposed to the World Cup in Brazil increased by 31% (10% in November 2008 compared to 41% in April 2014).

  • Datafolha conducted the research between 02 and 04/04/2014, with 2,673 people in 162 localities.
