Spain: international goalkeeper Iker Casillas, 38, candidate to become president of the Federation

"Yes, I will run for the presidency of the RFEF when the elections are held. Together we will put our Federation on a par with the best football in the world: that of Spain," said Spanish international goalkeeper Iker Casillas, via Twitter, on 17/02/2020.

Iker Casillas, captain of Spain's 2010 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and winner of Euro 2008 and 2012 (167 caps), was born on 20/05/1981 and played as a goalkeeper for Real Madrid CF (LaLiga Santander) from 1999 to 2015. His opponent will be Luis Rubiales, president of the Spanish Federation since 17/05/2018, who has already announced his intention to run again in 2020.

Elections are expected to be held in the second half of 2020, after the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. However, they could possibly take place in the first half of the year, before Euro 2020, as per the current management's wishes. The decision is up to Spain's Secretary of State for Sports and president of the Consejo Superior de Deportes (The National Sports Council), Irene Lozano.
