DAZN: fight sports are the "first step" in the global expansion of the OTT platform

"Establishing DAZN as the global home of fight sports is just the first step," said Joseph Markowski, executive vice-president of the the OTT sports platform DAZN, following the announcement on 02/03/2020, of its expansion to over 200 countries and territories from 02/05/2020, with the next fight of the Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez scheduled for the same date.

"We are an OTT player that aims to disrupt the hegemony of pay-TV over the sports rights ecosystem. We are buying sports rights and the answers is yes we are going to bid for this and for that. I don't believe that a single sport OTT service is not going to win (do well). The success of an OTT service by the leagues is quite unlikely. I can not imagine that a league OTT platform, broadcasting a single sport, can form a sustainable business. Tier one (or premium) rights help grow an OTT business, like the Serie A rights in Italy, and not niche sports rights.
