Covid-19: Italian Minister for Sport calls for the "immediate suspension of football championships"

"The (Italian) Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora, in agreement with the request of Damiano Tommasi, president of the AIC (Italian footballers union), has asked for the immediate suspension of the football championships," announced the AIC on 08/03/2020, which stated that on the same day the Minister received "a letter from President Tommasi - also sent to all the country's leaders and football leaders - asking to stop the Serie A TIM", in the face of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic which has already affected over 7,300 people and caused 366 deaths in Italy (as of 08/03/2020).

"It makes no sense at this moment, while we ask our citizens for enormous sacrifices to prevent the spread of the contagion, to risk the health of players, referees, coaches, fans who will certainly gather to see games, just to protect the interests that revolve around the sport," said Vincenzo Spadafora, Minister of the "5-Star Movement".
