"Discovery fully supports the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee's plan to stage the Olympic Games in 2021 and to make every effort to ensure the well-being of spectators, athletes, staff and the international community," announced the American audiovisual group, parent company of the pay-TV group Eurosport and holders of the broadcasting rights to the competition in almost all of Europe (see below), in a statement on 24/03/2020.

The postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games until "no later than summer 2021" has been endorsed by the IOC and Japan, at a time when the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has already caused more than 19,600 deaths worldwide and is forcing the confinement of 2.7 billion people as of 25/03/2020.

"Our essential planning and deliverables are complete and will now shift into next year. We will continue to develop our products and offerings to best serve our customers and marketing partners in 2021," added Discovery.
