Covid-19/Tokyo 2020: footballers born in 1997 will be able to participate in the 2021 Olympic Games

"To keep the eligibility criteria originally foreseen (players born on or after 01/01/1997 and three additional players)" for the postponed Men's Olympic Football Tournament in Tokyo 2021 is one of the recommendations of the "FIFA-Confederations working group which was recently established by the Bureau of the FIFA Council to address the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, following its first meeting, which was organised via conference call," on 04/04/2020.

The Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were scheduled from 24/07 to 09/08/2020, were rescheduled from 23/07 to 08/08/2021 by the IOC, the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and the Japanese authorities on 30/03/2020 due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which has already claimed the lives of at least 74,866 deaths worldwide as of 07/04/2020.

While, there are no age restrictions for the Women's Olympic football tournament, this is not the case for the men's tournament:
