Covid-19/Tokyo 2020: "Several hundred million dollars of additional costs" (T. Bach, IOC)

"For us, the IOC, it is already clear that we shall be faced with several hundred million dollars of additional costs (due to the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games)," said Thomas Bach, president of the IOC, to the German daily Die Welt on 12/04/2020.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, scheduled from Friday 24/07 to Sunday 08/09/2020, were rescheduled from Friday 23/07 to Sunday 08/08/2021, by the IOC, the Olympic Organising Committee and the Japanese authorities, on 30/03/2020.

The Organising Committee for the 2020 Olympics announced a fourth and final version of its ¥630bn (€5.17bn) budget on 20/12/2019 (see details below). The total cost of the event is ¥1.350bn (€11bn), of which ¥747bn (€6.1bn) is to be borne by the Japanese State and the City of Tokyo (see details below).

"Both our Japanese partners and the prime minister made it very clear to me that Japan could not manage a postponement beyond next summer at the latest. The top priority, of course, remains the health of the athletes and everyone involved in the Games and the containment of the virus," said Thomas Bach.
