Spain: Telefonica acquires Champions League TV rights for the 2021-2024 cycle (Spanish media)

The Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica has acquired, for its pay-TV subsidiary Movistar, the rights to broadcast the Champions League in Spain over the 2021-2024 cycle for an estimated amount of more than €1bn (over €333m per season), according to Spanish media on 15/04/2020, which made no mention of the allocation of the rights to the Europa League and the Europa Conference League over the same period.

Movistar is the current broadcaster of the competition in Spain, since Telefonica acquired the broadcasting rights for the Champions League and Europa League from the Spanish audiovisual group Mediapro for an estimated €360m per season over the 2018-2021 cycle, on 28/06/2018. The value of the TV rights to the Champions League in Spain therefore remains virtually stable, having more than doubled between the 2015-2018 and 2018-2021 cycles.
