Brazil 2014: FIFA works with channel NHK to shoot games in 8K

"We are working in partnership with the Japanese channel NHK on the production of matches in 8K. It will be a few matches, and the preparation will be very different than for matches produced in 4K (Ultra HD). There will be a handful of cameras, because only a few exist. But that means that we can convert the images produced in 8K down for 4K productions," Niclas Ericson, director of the television department of FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), said on 09/04/2014. He was speaking of the 2014 World Cup (Brazil, 12/06 to 07/13/2014).

The 8K technology offers an image quality at 16 times HD (high definition); that means an image of 7680 (length) by 4320 (height) pixels, or 33.2 megapixels, compared to 2.1 megapixels (1920 x 1080) with current "full HD" technology. Only a few cameras are currently capable of producing 8K images; almost all of these are owned by Japanese public broadcaster NHK. No 8K TVs are currently available for purchase by the general public.
