Serie A/TV rights: offer from Bain Capital (investment fund) of €3bn for a 25% stake in the league

The US investment fund Bain Capital has made a €3bn offer to the Lega Serie A to acquire a 25% stake in the Italian league and manage the sale of its media rights (from the 2021-22 season), according to the US financial media company Bloomberg on 11/06/2020.

This offer would compete with another, similar offer from the Luxembourg-based investment fund CVC Capital Partners. The latter reportedly made an offer of €2.2bn to acquire a 20% stake and manage the media rights of the Italian league over a 10-year period (starting with the 2021-22 season) in May 2020. The money would also be used to set up a fund to improve stadiums in Italy, according to Bloomberg.

The contracts for the national (held by Sky Italia and DAZN for €973m per season) and international (held by IMG and RAI for €371m per season) TV rights to the Serie A TIM both end at the end of the 2020-21 season (2018-2021 cycle). The Swiss agency Infront is the exclusive advisor to the Lega Serie A for the sale of its media rights for the 2015-2021 period.
