Spain: Orange extends its distribution agreement with Telefonica (LaLiga and European cups)

The Spanish subsidiary of the French telecommunications group Orange is extending its distribution agreement with its competitor Telefonica, in order to distribute its football channels for the 2020-21 season, on 25/06/2020. The amount of the agreement would again be around €300m per year according to the Spanish press.

Telefonica notably holds the broadcasting rights, in Spain, to LaLiga Santander (nine matches out of 10 per week) and LaLiga SmartBank (nine matches out of 11 per week), for €1bn per season (2019-2022 cycle), as well as those to the European cups for the 2018-2021 cycle, bought from the Chinese-Spanish audiovisual group Mediapro, for €360m per season, on 28/06/2018.

The free-TV group Mediaset España had also concluded a distribution agreement with Telefonica for the launch of its paid OTT offer "Mitele" in the summer of 2019, but this will not be extended this season. Mitele has 135,000 subscribers, 60% of whom follow football matches according to the Spanish press.
