Covid-19: a loss of €3.6bn in revenue for the clubs of the 10 main European leagues (ECA)

European clubs will lose €1.5bn in revenue (excluding transfers) for the 2019-20 season and €2.1bn for the 2020-21 season, or a total of €3.6bn, according to a study entitled "Covid-19 The Financial Impact on European clubs", conducted by the European Club Association and published on 07/07/2020 (document available to download).

This analysis covers the clubs in the following 10 championships: Premier League, Bundesliga, LaLiga Santander, Serie A TIM, Ligue 1 Uber Eats, Süper Lig, Eredivisie, Liga NOS, Ladbrokes Premiership and Ekstraklasa.

"Despite 7 of the 10 leagues in our sample returning to play in June 2020 (only the Belgian, Scottish and French championships were been definitively ended), the financial impact is significant," said the ECA, which calculates the shortfall in the cumulative EBITDA of all the clubs at €2.8bn.

"Clubs and those that represent them must continue to develop mitigating measures (cost, regulatory) and to adapt them over time to maintain economic balance and ensure viability. Managing cost and cash will be key until revenues have stabilised once more,…
