DR Congo: At least 15 dead, 21 injured during ASV Club match - TP Mazembe

Provisionally, at least 15 are dead and 21 have been wounded in incidents during the match between Association Sportive Vita Club (ASV) and TP Mazembe (0-1, Democratic Republic of Congo championship, the sixth matchday of the playoffs) at the Tata Raphaël stadium (capacity 50,000) in Kinshasa on 11/05/2014. This is according to the DR Congo's interior ministry.

The two clubs faced off in a decisive match on the sixth and last matchday of the playoffs. "ASV's fans were not able to take in the performance of their club and Mazembe's success," reported Radio Okapi, one of DR Congo's main radio stations. "So they started throwing things onto the field, causing the referee to interrupt the match. The police fired tear gas. Fans were all looking for an exit. In the confusion, a stadium wall collapsed."

Going back several seasons, ASV Club and TP Mazembe matches have led to numerous incidents that prompted police to deploy many men around the Tata Raphaël stadium.
