France: TF1 to broadcast the 2020 Champions League final on free-TV exclusively on Sunday 23/08/2020

TF1 will broadcast, in France, the final of the 2019-20 Champions League (in Lisbon, Portugal) exclusively on free-TV, on Sunday 23/08/2020, announced the private, free-TV channel on 23/07/2020.

The TF1 group acquired these rights via sub-license from the telecom operator Altice Europe, holder of the exclusive broadcasting rights, in France, to the UEFA European cups over the 2018-2021 cycle for an amount of €350m per season.

TF1 acquired the broadcasting rights for the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Champions League finals on 12/09/2019. No announcement has been made, for the moment, regarding the 2021 edition, the rights to which are held by Altice.

The 2018-19 Champions League final was broadcast by the free-TV news channel BFMTV (Altice group) on 01/06/2019. BFMTV had been put on notice by the CSA (French audiovisual control body) on 05/06/2020 following this broadcast. Altice France had decided to broadcast the meeting on BFMTV despite a decision of the CSA of 03/04/2019, in which it was indicated that this broadcast was incompatible with the content convention of the channel.
