Rugby: Russian Federation prepares bid to host the 2027 World Cup

The supreme council of the Russian Rugby Federation (Russian Rugby) has set up a committee to prepare a bid to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup, according to the body on 28/07/2020. Russia previously hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

"The start of the bidding campaign officially begins in February 2021 and a decision will be made by World Rugby in May 2022," said the Russian body, whose only opponent is Australia, following the withdrawal of Argentina's bid in April 2020.

Rugby Australia, the Australian rugby federation, confirmed its candidacy on 16/06/2020 through its newly elected president, Hamish McLennan, who was appointed the day before. However, the body is in financial difficulty and took out a long-term loan of $14.2m (€13m) from World Rugby on 14/05/2020.

In 2023, France will host the 10^th edition of the Rugby World Cup as announced by World Rugby in London (ENG) on 15/11/2017. The two other candidate countries were South Africa and Ireland.
