"Football players and everyone else involved in should remember that their actions serve as a strong symbol for the millions of viewers around the world. Football stakeholders have a collective duty to show leadership and set an example in the rigorous application of these measures," states UEFA in the preamble of the body's Return to Play protocol (document available to download) published on 06/08/2020.

"The aim of the this document is to set out a single medical and operational protocol applicable to competitive football matches of UEFA senior club and national teams for men and women as well as all matches of the UEFA club competition final tournaments at all levels," said the European body.

This "Return to Play protocol" imposes medical and operational obligations on all parties organising or taking part in UEFA matches. "While it is impossible to establish a completely risk-free environment, the aim is to lower the risk as far as possible by applying current medical advice and best practices," added UEFA.
