Spain: decree-law to ban advertising for betting companies to be "approved in October 2020"

"Thanks to a royal decree-law that will be approved in October 2020, we will ban advertising for sports betting operators on football club jerseys," stated Alberto Garzón, Spanish Minister of Consumer Protection, on Spanish television (la Sexta, Atresmedia), on 27/08/2020.

The text of this law provides that sports betting operators can no longer appear on club outfits, as well as in the names of stadiums, training centers or teams. The text limits advertising for bookmakers on TV, radio, YouTube and other streaming platforms to the 01:00 - 05:00 box. This text has already been presented to the European Commission in July 2020.

"Currently, clubs are extending their partnerships with bookmakers for two or three seasons. This is unwise. They are making a serious mistake and will have to quickly correct this. I ask clubs to anticipate events, not to insist more on these partnerships because it is now inevitable, jersey sponsorship from betting operators will be banned," explained the Spanish minister.
