Brazil 2014: Sao Paulo stadium's roof will not be finished in time for opening match

The roof of the stadium in Sao Paulo (capacity 65,800) will not be fully completed for the opening of the World Cup (Brazil-Croatia, 12/06/2014), the construction company Odebrecht announced on 16/05/2014.

Some of the 36,000 spectators who attended the test match held on 18/05/2014 between Corinthians and Figueirense (0-1, Brazilian Serie A), were obliged to change places to seek shelter from the rain. The majority of the 20,000 temporary seats have not yet been approved by the security committee. The 3G network was overloaded from the beginning of the match, the VIP areas are still under construction and two of the four elevators do not work. The stadium's surroundings remain undeveloped and no public lighting has been installed.

"We can't say that everything is 100 percent. There were some leaks in some areas and an elevator didn't work, but these things can happen even in our own homes. Now we have to work to get things right," said Ricardo Trade, president of the LOC (Local Organising Committee).

The Corinthians Arena must be officially delivered on 21/05/2014.
