Premier League: Tencent acquires broadcasting rights in China for the 2020-21 season

Tencent, a Chinese internet services group, has acquired the rights to broadcast in China the "remaining 372 matches" of the 2020-21 Premier League season, announced the English League on 17/09/2020.

The first eight Premier League matches scheduled for Matchday 1 of the 2020-21 season played on the weekend of 12/09/2020 were not broadcast in China following the termination of the English League's contract with PPTV on 03/09/2020 (see below).

The amount paid by Tencent is less than the $233m (€197m) per annum (€197m) that PPTV was to pay over the 2019-2022 season, according to the British daily newspaper The Financial Times.

Tencent will offer "more than half" of the matches free of charge, while the remaining matches will be available through the Tencent Sports pay-TV offer. Tencent will begin broadcasting this Saturday 19/09/2020.
