Romania: Liga I may streamline to 14 clubs (from 18) in 2015-16 to improve competitiveness

Liga I (Romanian 1st division championship) may streamline, going from 18 to 14 clubs in the 2015-16 season, the LPF (Romanian Professional Football League) announced on 17/05/2014. The goal is to improve the competitiveness of the Romanian championship.

La Liga II (Romanian 2nd division) would also be affected by a change in format; It currently consists of two groups of 12 teams, and it would consist of a single pool of 20 teams beginning in 2015-16, if the reform is confirmed.

Before being implemented, the proposal from the LPF must be approved by Romanian clubs. It would have the support of several of the country's big clubs, including Steaua Bucharest.

  • Dinamo Bucharest -- the second most successful in the history of the country, with 18 championship titles -- announced its bankruptcy on 17/05/2014.
    • The club finished in 4th place in the Liga I in 2013-14.
    • Dinamo Bucharest Romania was the fifth club to go bankrupt in the past two years.
