LFP TV rights: Canal+ demands equal treatment with Mediapro, latter will communicate on 21/10/2020

The French pay and free-TV group Canal+ is demanding equal treatment in the event of a possible discount granted to the Chinese-Spanish group Mediapro for the broadcasting rights to Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Ligue 2 BKT, in a letter addressed to the LFP on 08/10/2020, reported L'Équipe on 20/10/2020.

The general assembly of the LFP "unanimously" validated a loan of €112m to compensate for the non-payment of Mediapro (due October 2020 of approximately €140m), reported Agence France Presse on 19/10/2020. This solution was proposed during the League's board of directors on 15/10/2020. This loan was taken out with an Anglo-Saxon bank and the interest rate would be 5.5% according to French media.

Another loan could also be contracted by the French League if the third deadline (out of six per season) is not honored on 05/12/2020 by the Chinese-Spanish group, which holds the rights to 85% of Ligue 1 Uber Eats matches (including 80% exclusively) and 80% of Ligue 2 BKT matches, over the 2020-2024 cycle, for an estimated amount of €830m per season.
